Specifically, Kia is produced in southwest Seoul in the Yeongdeungpo-gu district. In 1973, Kia opened its first integrated automotive assembly plant and created automobiles mainly for the Korean market. 

Brief Kia History: From Seoul to Across the Globe 

While Kia has made its name as a renowned automobile manufacturer, many East Boston drivers don’t know that Kia didn’t originally begin in the auto industry. Formerly known as Kyungsung Precision Industry, the brand first began producing steel pipes and bicycle parts by hand. Once the company established itself in the steel industry, they began manufacturing entire bikes in 1951. A year later, the brand was renamed “Kia.” Eventually, Kia started producing motorcycles as well, later moving onto commercial vehicles in 1962–becoming Kia as we all know it today!

It wasn’t until 1992 that Kia dealerships started opening in the United States, and by 1995, there were 30 Kia dealerships stateside. Kia has only continued to grow over the years, producing popular vehicles Winthrop drivers know and love like the Soul and Sportage.
