What is the Kia Pride?

Do you know the true Kia Rio history? In the automotive industry, certain vehicles have been around much longer than you think. Some models have been around for MUCH longer, but the model names were changed completely, throwing you for the trail of history. The Kia Rio is one of these vehicles, and we’ve got the historical information on this popular model.
The Real Kia Rio History
The Kia Rio, a sporty and popular selection for budget-minded drivers in the Revere area, has been in the Kia lineup for a substantial period. However, the Kia Rio actually goes back much further than that. In the infancy of this now popular model, it was known as the Kia Pride, and ultimately, over time, because known as the Kia Rio we know today.
The Kia Pride existed until a little over 10 years ago in the Korean markets, but if you ask a driver in the United States, they’ve probably never heard of one. If you’re a Revere driver and own a Kia Rio, check out the history below.
Kia Rio History: The Pride to the Rio
The Pride and the Rio weren’t always the same car. Kia Pride history goes all the way back to 1987 and was Kia’s subcompact model sold in South Korea. It was originally based on the Ford Festiva. Here is a brief timeline:
Kia Pride History
- March 1987 – January 2000: Subcompact model sold by Kia in South Korean markets
- April 2005– September 2011: The “Kia New Pride” was the South Korean market name for the second generation of the Kia Rio, which was sold in export markets.
- 2011 – Present: Sold as the Kia Pride in South Korea, based on the third generation of Kia Rio.
Meanwhile, in the United States, the Kia Rio history looks like this:
- “1st Generation” Kia Rio: 1999-2005
- 2nd Generation Kia Rio: 2006-2011
- 3rd Generation Kia Rio: 2012-2017
- 4th Generation Kia Rio: 2018-Present
As you can see, the Kia Rio’s history begins in South Korea was the Kia Pride, from 1987-2000. At that point, the same design was manufactured in the United States and received the name “Kia Rio.” The Pride lived on in South Korea until 2011, the same year the 3rd generation Rio was born, at which point the Rio monicker was adopted in South Korea as well.
