How to Reset a Check Engine Light

check engine light on

If you’ve been driving around Boston and your check engine light suddenly illuminates, you’re not alone. More often than not, you may determine that there’s nothing wrong with your engine, but the light still won’t turn off. The Pride Kia of Lynn service center is here to walk you through three ways you can reset a check engine light.

Reset Check Engine Light: If There is a Problem, Be Sure to Get it Fixed

Drivers who have reached the point of wondering how to reset a check engine light are either sure there’s nothing wrong, or they’ve decided to forgo fixing the issue. While this is ultimately the driver’s decision, we do urge our customers to take care of issues as soon as they arise, especially for their own safety. Also, ignoring a problem can result in it gradually becoming a bigger, much more expensive problem in the long run. Thus, if you are wondering how to reset your check engine light, take a few minutes to schedule a service appointment at Pride Kia of Lynn. We’re located just a short drive from Saugus, and our expert technicians can take a good look at your vehicle and address any potential issues.

Reset Check Engine Light: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

If you’ve inspected your vehicle and haven’t found a problem, then manually resetting your check engine light is the next best option. If you’re not someone who frequently works with cars, this may sound like a daunting task, but it’s actually quite easy! Follow the steps below to reset your check engine light:

  1. Turn off the ignition and put on safety glasses and gloves
  2. Locate the negative terminal. Usually, it has a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. For reference, the positive cap is red and will have a positive (+) symbol.
  3. Loosen the nut on the negative terminal with a wrench, then pull the negative connector from the battery. Keep it to the side for 30 – 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and tighten it back up with your wrench.

Adhering to these steps should reset your check engine light. However, if it doesn’t, we have another option for you to try! Also, please keep in mind that disconnecting your battery may also reset UVO system.

Reset Check Engine Light: Check Your Gas Cap

If your check engine light is on, then you may just have a loose or cracked gas gap, which causes a release of fumes. Oftentimes, your engine light will illuminate as a result. When you’re safely parked, remove your gas cap then put it right back on. Is the engine light still on? Try following the steps above to disconnect the battery and you should be good to go!
